Scarlet shamrock
A well-balanced, malty Irish Red Ale. Complex yet easy drinking. It pours a deep amber colour with a ruby hue and a thick, creamy head. On the palate it has a smooth malty richness with caramel and nutty undertones.
old boy's brew | Dry Stout
A classic dry stout that offers a harmonious blend of roasted malt flavours, a moderate bitterness, and a smooth creamy mouthfeel. It’s a well balanced beer that showcases th complexity of dark malts while remaining highly drinkable. Ideal for pairing with hearty dishes, cheeses or just simply enjoyed on its own.
Sunshade | Rice & corn lager
Is it Cerveza or Biru? Like a mariachi band playing in Tokyo it seems a little confusing but damn does it work!
Taking inspiration from both beers from across the Pacific to create the ultimate expression of refreshment. Brewed using rice, corn and just the right amount of hops, it’s the ultimate world tour in a pint glass.
Limited Releases
Located in Sydney’s inner-city suburb of Camperdown, The Malt Shovel Brewery is home to a small team of expert brewers who, relying on minimal automation, experiment with hand-crafted, innovative brews that have come to be known as the James Squire Limited Releases.
Year Round Brews
Enjoy all of your well-known favourites from the James Squire core range year round!
Broken Shackles Lager
James Squire fought his way to freedom, taking plenty of risks and finally breaking the shackles of his seven year sentence to set up Australia’s first brewery.
A crisp lager that exhibits a balance of subtle herbaceous hop notes with a refreshingly uncomplicated clean finish. Brewed using pale and munich malts combined with noble Hallertau Mittelfruh hops, this brew is a quality quencher.
The Swindler Tropical Pale
Nine stolen chickens earned James Squire a cramped berth on the First Fleet. But he had other plans, swindling his way onto the ‘Women’s Ship’ & thoroughly enjoyed the rest of his journey.
Swindle yourself a moment to savour this refreshing dry hopped summer ale. Light straw in colour with a billowy head and bursting with tropical notes of pear and watermelon, The Swindler is the perfect summer side-kick.
Mid River Pale Ale
Mid River is a full flavoured pale ale with Vienna and Munich malts creating a rich, malty character. German hops give crisp herbaceous flavours and US hops add bright citrus and fruit aromas. All of this with just 3.5% alcohol.
One Fifty Lashes Pale Ale
When James Squire was discovered stealing ingredients from the stores to make the colony’s first batch of beer, the Judge ordered 150 lashes… plus two barrels of ale. Thankfully for us, James Squire was a far better brewer than he was a thief.
A clean-finishing, Australian-style cloudy pale ale for cracking refreshment. Malted wheat adds to its refreshing character and a concoction of hops creates fruity aromas with hints of passionfruit, grapefruit & citrus.
The CHancer Golden Ale
Never one to let a ball and chain hold him back, ex-convict James Squire seized every opportunity his emancipation offered. His unique blend of charm, skill and luck ultimately rewarded him with an enviable fortune as Australia’s first brewer.
Arguably the best looking of the James Squire craft beer range, the highly-drinkable The Chancer is noted for its distinctive orange-golden colour, unique tropical fruit aroma, restrained bitterness and dry finish.
HOP THIEF NO. 10 AMERICAN PALE ALE
By hook or by crook, James Squire always found a way to source the finest hops available for his flavoursome ales. Sometimes this resulted in a good lashing and other times in a handsome reward, but always in a good story to tell with a great-tasting beer.
Full bodied with some malt sweetness upfront balanced by a refreshing moderating bitterness with complex hop flavours and accompanying aromas of mandarin, passionfruit and cream. Hop Thief 10, the latest in the series again celebrates what amazing characteristics hops can contribute to beer. This time we’ve added a newbie Sabro to add some unique flavours along with some of the classic favourites Simcoe, Mosaic and Galaxy.
JACK OF SPADES PORTER
Back when rum was the unofficial currency, it took a real gambler to bet his future on brewing. But James Squire was never one to shy away from a challenge, quickly building a fortune from his brewery and tavern.
Utterly unique, Jack of Spades Porter has a more delicate complexity than a regular stout with its rich black colour, coffee and chocolate aroma, and pillowy head.
ALCOHOLIC GINGER BEER
James Squire Ginger Beer has been carefully crafted with Australian ginger for a light, refreshing and zingy ginger taste. It can be enjoyed straight from the can or over ice with fresh lime.
ORCHARD CRUSH APPLE CIDER
As Australia’s first brewer, James Squire grew many of the ingredients found in his first batches of brew himself. Having had an orchard on his land, it wouldn’t be surprising if he experimented with cider in his day.
Orchard Crush is a traditional cloudy cider with a fragrant, fresh aroma, a broad, clean palate and a crisp finish, making for a most refreshing choice.
